Mbappe, whose father is originally from Cameroon, said he has always remained connected to his African roots despite being born and raised in France, which he represented throughout his international career.
The 26-year-old said his upbringing was deeply influenced by African culture and that he has never lost touch with his origins.
“I’ve always had an upbringing steeped in African culture, even though I was born in France and did everything in France. I have never cut ties with my roots, my origins. It’s part of the values instilled in you,” he said.
Mbappe also recalled his recent visit to Cameroon, saying he had previously travelled there as a child and enjoyed the experience.
Addressing African voters in the Ballon d’Or race, the French international thanked them for their continued support and said he has always felt welcomed whenever he visits the continent.
“First off, I want to thank them for the support over all these years. I’ve always felt so loved every time I’ve set foot on the African continent,” he said.
Mbappe added that having African heritage makes it special for him to be associated with the Ballon d’Or and expressed hope that he would win the award and dedicate it to Africans.
“I hope to be able to walk away with the Ballon d’Or and, in one way or another, dedicate it to them too,” he said.
